Welcome, sugar! 💚 If you’re new to natural hair removal or just exploring healthier options, you’ve probably heard about sugaring — but did you know there are two techniques? At JBHomemade, I craft both firm sugaring paste and soft sugaring wax by hand using time-honored recipes and pure ingredients from my own gardens here in Tennessee.

Not sure which is right for your skin or hair type? This handy comparison will guide you through the key differences between my firm paste (best for thick/coarse hair and experienced hands) and soft wax (ideal for finer hair and traditional waxing with strips). Both are gentle, botanical, and made with love — but they work a little differently. 🌿

Temperature

Paste: Used at room temperature — no heating required.
Wax: Gently warmed until it reaches a honey-like consistency.

Thickness

Paste: Spread about 1/4 inch thick for best grip.
Wax: Applied in thin layers over larger areas.

Application Tool

Paste: Applied by hand or with the included applicator.
Wax: Applied with included applicator, a wooden spatula or butter knife.

Direction of Application

Both paste and wax are applied against the natural direction of hair growth.

Both paste and wax are removed with the natural direction of hair growth, making it gentler than traditional waxing.

Method of Removal

Paste: Removed by hand with flicking motion or included applicator.
Wax: Removed using reusable denim strips (included with kits).

Wait — what about salon waxing?

Hot waxing at salons has been around for decades (since the ’80s glam era, y’all!) — but it often involves synthetic resins, intense heat, and painful ripping in the opposite direction of hair growth. Ouch. 😣

Sugaring, on the other hand, is the gentle rebel of the hair removal world — it works with your skin, not against it. It’s water-soluble, eco-friendly, less likely to cause ingrown hairs, and perfect for sensitive skin. Once you sugar, there’s no going back to the strip-and-scream routine.
