I use essential oils in some of my organic and natural skin care products, as most larger skin care manufacturers do nowadays.
When making my sugar scrubs and skincare products I’m using the highest quality ingredients I can get my hands on. I’m small time compared to them, by golly! However, I have the benefit of an awesome homestead with my gardens and a nearby Amish community. Be it by gardening in our mushroom compost gardens or traveling to the nearby Amish community I am able to offer you handmade, small batch products made with your natural skin care regimen in mind.
And I’m still adding as the months roll on. I get all my essential oils and some of my organic ingredients from the Haebaeggar’s Amish in Scottsville, KY. Our gardens and greenhouse boast the blooms and greens of mint, lavender, aloe vera, hollyhock, roses, st john’s wort and more. But when it comes to essential oils, that’s a whole ‘nother category in and of itself. Essentials are so concentrated that just a few drops is enough to make a recipe complete.
I have recipes in the works than include using Ylang Ylang and Geranium, as well. I use Clove in my Diabetic Pain Relief Salve. Essentials are an integral ingredient in many skincare recipes found online and from big name brands. Leave me a comment and let me know what you’d like to see me make! Alrighty y’all. On to the essentials (oils, that is)!

Infusion is the process of extracting chemical compounds or flavors from plant material in a solvent such as water, oil or alcohol, by allowing the material to remain suspended in the solvent over time (a process often called steeping). An infusion is also the name for the resultant liquid. How to make your own herbal or floral infusions
How to make your own herbal or floral infusions Simply soaking herbs in oil isn’t enough to infuse the oil; it needs to be heated. There are a few ways of doing this so you will likely find one that suits your needs. The following describes how to infuse oils using the stovetop, a slow cooker, and the sun! The common thread to all methods is to pack as many dried herbs as you can fit in a container, and then pour over the oil so that the herbs are completely submerged. Choose herbs that are completely dry (moisture and oil don’t mix). When the infusing is finished, strain the herbs from the oil with a fine sieve once, then pour the oil through a coffee filter or cheesecloth lined fine sieve. Store the infused oil with a tight fitting lid in a cool, dark place. @jen_at_jbhomemade Step one: Infuse the oils. Pack a handful of herbs in the top of a double boiler, and pour oil over. If you are using coconut oil which is solid at room temperature, melt the coconut oil first then add the herbs. Fill the bottom pot with an inch of water and set the double boiler on medium low heat to warm up, then turn down to low for a few hours or until the oil becomes aromatic. Slow Cooker Oil Infusing The slow cooker method takes longer but it requires less attention than the other methods. Just set it and forget it! If you have a small slow cooker, you can add the herbs right into the ceramic bowl and set it on warm for a minimum of 8-12 hours. I usually go 48 hours. Sun Infused Oil Pack herbs into mason jars and pour oil over them. Screw on a lid and set in the sun for 8 hours. The summer sun can be very hot, so this method is best used in cooler months and with large jars. Over heating the oils can remove some of the beneficial properties and this method is one you will have to watch more closely. It doesn’t use any power beyond the sun so you can infuse oils right out in the garden as you harvest them!
